Tips to improve reading comprehension. Many ways can be used to improve our reading comprehension. What type of reader you are
If you are a passive reader who likes to use highlighter your reading will delay your learning since you will only read the highlighted material then the other. You will highlight most of your reading and be busy with it without concentrating on the reading.

If you are reading the materials only to get finished of it you will decrease your retention of the material read since you do not really focus on the important points.

Proper time to read
The best time to read is when you are really fresh and not tired. This will allow you to concentrate better and gain more information then studying at the time when you are tired so I suggest you to read in the morning.

Define a reading goal
Try to make a reading goal to achieve, it will be come your motivator to read better.  Here you may try to read 30 or 40 minute in a time and take a short break, define it as your goal.

Read on quiet location
The best place to read is on the quiet location where there are no distractions. Try to avoid your residence hall room on campus as well as the lounge.

Monitor your  comprehension
Ask yourself "what I have learned by reading a kind of material. If you are having a trouble answering it so you need to reread the material or ask other for more information.

Skimming the chapter first
Do the skimming step when you read. Start reading from the tittle, preface, subtitle, introduction, chapter summary before come to the entire chapter.

Being more active reader

  1. Survey: get an idea of what it will cover by look over the chapter. It will ease your way into the reading assignment.
  2. Question: Ask “what is this chapter about?” and “what examples support the author’s point in the chapter?” and you will get the point of your material.
  3. Read: Read the material carefully and do not forget to make a note. Review them after you finish that particular section, then continue guessing  your reading to see whether you are understanding the material or not.
  4. Review: This point is very important so try to make a review regularly. By doing this, you will start to enlarge your understanding of the main point of the material. The more you review the material the better your understanding will be of that topic. 
  5. Recite: Speak your reviewing material up loudly. This helps immensely because you are utilizing both hemispheres of your brain.
