Functional Text, Procedural Texts - After I discussed earlier about recount text, this time I'll invite you to learn about the Functional Text about Procedural Texts. At this discussion, we will discuss how to create a procedural text that can be used as a guide in making something or achieve something.
Explanation of Procedural Texts
Procedural texts tell how to do something. It is usually organized to include the goal of the activity, any materials needed to achieve the goal, steps to accomplish the goal.
The purpose procedural text is to tell the reader how to do or make something. The information is presented in a logical sequence of events which is broken up into small sequenced steps. These texts are usually written in the present tense. The most common example of a procedural text is a recipe. (Source: www.english.unitecnology.ac)
Social function
to describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps.
Generic structure
- Goal.
- Materials (not required for all procedural texts)
- Steps (a series of steps oriented to achieving the goal)
There are different procedural texts for different purposes:
- Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.
- Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules.
- Texts that deal with human behavior e.g. how to live happily, how to succeed.

The grammatical patterns of this procedural text include:
- the use of commands, e.g. ‘cut’, ‘add’, ‘pour’;
- the use of action verbs, e.g. ‘wash’, ‘boil’;
- the use of precise vocabulary, e.g. ‘fry’, ‘boil’, ‘fragrant’;
- the use of adverbials to express details of time and place, manner and so on, e.g. “1 inch thick”, “until fragrant”, “until chicken changes color”.
